High-performance Methyl Isoamyl Ketone (MIAK) Solvent

Kabasph^® MIAK (Methyl Isoamyl Ketone, also known as 5-methyl-2-hexanone or isoheptanone) is a colorless transparent liquid with a light, pleasant odor. It exhibits good dissolving power for cellulose acetate, acrylic resins, polyvinyl formal resins, and nitrocellulose. MIAK combines multiple performance advantages, including high solvent activity, a slow evaporation rate, low surface tension, and a high boiling point. It performs particularly well in high-solids coating systems, effectively reducing coating viscosity and helping formulators achieve low-viscosity, high-solids coating designs while meeting increasingly stringent VOC environmental regulations.

In addition, MIAK holds significant value in organic synthesis, serving as a key raw material for the production of p-phenylenediamine-based rubber antioxidants (such as 7PPD, 77PD, and TMPPD). Compared to esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and glycol ether solvents with similar evaporation rates, MIAK's lower density makes it an ideal choice that balances environmental compliance and performance.
