Automotive Primer Additives: Dispersants, Anti-Settling Agents, Leveling Agents, Defoamers & Adhesion Promoters Primer is where an automotive coating system either holds or fails. It carries the adhesion to metal, the filling and hiding power, the corrosion resistance and the sandability that everything above it depends on. Yet formulators keep running into the same six problems: pigment and filler dispersion with high millbase viscosity, settling and sagging during storage and vertical application, poor substrate wetting, entrapped foam, film shrinkage, and adhesion loss on difficult substrates.

Why Automotive Primer Systems Fail — and Where Additives Help
An automotive primer has to satisfy conflicting requirements at the same time: high pigment and filler loading for filling and hiding, low enough viscosity for spraying and grinding efficiency, enough low-shear structure to stop hard settling in the can, and enough film integrity to bond to metal and accept a topcoat without shrinkage or pinholes. Additives are where these conflicts are resolved. Across primer, primer surfacer and intermediate coat systems, the same six failure points recur, and each one maps to a specific additive function below.
Five Functions of Kabasph KBS Additives for Automotive Primers
1. Pigment and Filler Dispersion with Viscosity Reduction — KBS-F4020, KBS-F5000A
Our high-performance dispersing and wetting agents for automotive primer systems, such as KBS-F4020 and KBS-F5000A, deliver stable pigment dispersion, viscosity reduction and color development. KBS-F4020 is a modified polyurethane compound that inhibits floating color, provides general-purpose dispersion, inorganic viscosity reduction and organic pigment dispersion. KBS-F5000A is an acid polyester compound offering general-purpose dispersion, viscosity reduction and high cost performance. Both are suitable for the stable dispersion of wetting and dispersing additives in high-filler primer systems.
2. Anti-Settling, Anti-Sagging and Rheology Control — KBS-C330, KBS-C410, KBS-C3120X
Our hot-selling rheology control additives for automotive primers, such as KBS-C330, KBS-C410 and KBS-C3120X, provide anti-settling and anti-sagging performance. KBS-C330 is a polyethylene wax paste that is easily dispersed, does not affect gloss, and gives reliable anti-settling and anti-sagging. KBS-C410 is an organic polyurethane/polyurea with excellent anti-settling performance and minimal effect on system viscosity, leveling and gloss. KBS-C3120X is a polyamide wax paste, easily dispersed, with excellent anti-settling and anti-sagging. Together with our sag control agent (SCA) technology and solid wax additives, they help automotive primers improve storage stability and vertical application.
3. Wetting, Leveling and Surface Control — KBS-L3060, KBS-L3540, KBS-L3770
Our high-performance leveling agents for automotive primers, such as KBS-L3060, KBS-L3540 and KBS-L3770, improve wetting, leveling and surface smoothness. KBS-L3060 is a silicone solution — a general-purpose silicone leveling agent that is less likely to affect recoatability. KBS-L3540 is a polyacrylate solution that improves leveling with good compatibility. KBS-L3770 is a fluorine-modified acrylate solution for long-wave leveling and dark foam elimination. They help primers reduce orange peel, fish eyes and shrinkage. See our full range of functional leveling agents.
4. Defoaming and Air Release — KBS-X052, KBS-X141, KBS-X066N
Our defoamers and air release additives for automotive primers, such as KBS-X052, KBS-X141 and KBS-X066N, combine compatibility with defoaming ability. KBS-X052 is a polyacrylate solution, KBS-X141 is a silicone solution, and KBS-X066N is a fluorine-modified silicone solution with strong defoaming and foam inhibition and no tendency to cause shrinkage. They are suitable for primer spray, roller coating and thick-film primer systems where foam entrapment and pinholes are the main defect risks.
5. Adhesion Promotion and Substrate Bonding — KBS-Z0100, KBS-Z0200, KBS-Z0300
Our adhesion promoters and coupling agents, such as KBS-Z0100, KBS-Z0200 and KBS-Z0300, improve adhesion to metal and other difficult substrates. KBS-Z0100 is an amino-containing organosilane, KBS-Z0200 is an epoxy-containing organosilane, and KBS-Z0300 is a polyester compound. They are designed for automotive primer systems where enhanced substrate bonding and intercoat adhesion are required.
